Let's Make Hats

Miss Emma Wachtman's Hat Shop
Miss Emma Wachtman purchased the Auburn Hat Shop in 1918. It was located in the Truit Building on West First Street in Auburn. By 1921, Emma had moved the shop to 25 West Main Street. In 1924 she added a beauty shop that was run by her two sisters. The hat shop was an exclusive shop. Hats were $5 and $12. Emma served tea for customers while they waited. The shop soon became the fashionable gathering place for Auburn ladies.

How to Make an Emergency Hat for Working in the Fields
From this activity, you will learn how to make a hat that fits like they did in the hat shop exhibit. But instead of using a wooden hat block mold, as they did in the shop, you will use a head. You will learn how to make a fast, easy and fun hat.

You Will Need:
 - scissors
 - newpapers
 - colored paper (if you want to decorate your hat)
 - a rubber band
 - tape of any kind

Directions:
1.  Get all your material together.
2.  Put the newpapers on your or someone else's head.
3.  Attach the rubber band onto your head.
4.  Tape the rubber band on so it doesn't pop off.
5.  Fold up the edges.
6.  Trim the sides.
7.  If you want, you can decorate it.

Project developed by Terminal Park Elementary students.
