MUSEUM ANNOUNCES UPCOMING EXHIBIT AND SUMMER PROGRAMS

Upcoming Exhibit
Abby Williams Hill, Western Pioneer and Landscape Artist

May 30 to September 23, 2007
In 1889 when Washington became a state Abby Williams Hill and her husband arrived in Tacoma in response to advertisements acclaiming the magnificence of Northwest mountain scenery. During the following years Abby Hill produced dozens of landscape paintings which were commissioned by railroad companies to extol the virtues of northwest scenery.

Abby Hill had both the opportunities and the means to live a comfortable life. But driven by a desire to experience the grandeur of our mountain scenery and to paint those vistas, this Victorian woman rejected the comforts of home and spent a good portion of her life living in the wilderness with her young children.

All of the artwork in this exhibit is on loan from the University of Puget Sound. It is generously sponsored by 4 Culture, the City of Auburn Arts Commission. and the University of Puget Sound.
