While participating in protests and direct actions, suffrage activists were encouraged to wear white. This was a conscious tactic by suffrage leaders to associate their movement with concepts often symbolized by white: femininity, purity, cleanliness, and the “quality of our purpose” according to the National Woman’s Party.
