International Order of Good Templars Picnic, 1893

The Temperance Movement has roots back to the 1700s, but it gained momentum in the 1840s and 1850s along with other Progressive issues like abolition and women’s suffrage. Temperance-oriented clubs and fraternal orders like the Independent Order of Good Templars, founded 1851, promoted complete abstinence from alcohol for members.
