WRVM Collection, XX.480,

Bloomers, c. 1920

Bloomers were first invented in the 1850s as part of the dress reform movement and were briefly worn by some feminist activists. They were brought back into feminist fashion with the New Woman in the 1890s, and became a part of women’s athletic fashion in the early 1900s.
