Top Hat, c. 1890

Dr. Mary Walker - surgeon, veteran of the Civil War, and Medal of Honor recipient -  was a loud proponent of dress reform. She wore bloomers, top hats, and tunics for most of her life, earning her accusations of “manishness”. Would they have listened to her if she wore dresses? Doubt it.
