The creation of public libraries was a favorite tactic of civic-minded women’s clubs. Libraries were seen as providing both an opportunity for self-improvement through learning, and an alternative to spending time in a saloon. The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union staffed and funded the first public library in Auburn.
