Red Cross Volunteer Recruitment ad, 1918

WWI Red Cross recruitment ads leaned heavily on themes of women nurses as icons of mercy, purity, and nurturing motherhood. They neglected to mention that most of the work done by Red Cross volunteers required years of training or experience in sewing, nursing, community organizing, driving, and other skilled labor.
