Ralph Waldo Emerson Quote Card, c. 1910

The idea of nature and wilderness being good and purifying spaces came from the Transcendentalism movement of the earlier 1800s. Popular transcendentalist authors like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were widely read and quoted by Progressive Era reformers. This postcard with an Emerson quote came from the scrapbook of suffragist Anne Fitzhugh Miller.
