The Fifteenth Amendment, 1870
Early white suffrage leaders were split about whether or not to support the 15th Amendment, which granted suffrage to Black men. Black women were forced to choose between supporting women’s suffrage and Black suffrage. Susan B. Anthony opposed the 15th amendment so adamantly, it scuttled her friendship with abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
