Anti-suffrage advocates used many strategies to criticize suffragists, but the most widespread and long-lasting were superficial insults having nothing to do with their political stances. Suffragists were painted as everything from ugly, unlovable, too feminine (or not feminine enough), cold-hearted, promiscuous, and shrill.
